INDIA POST MODERNISATION MOVES FORWARD
As part of its end-to-end IT modernisation project, India Post has released a notice inviting tenders for vendors to supply, install and maintain hardware solutions for rural ICT.
The project, India Post 2012, was launched in September 2012. Services are being procured through 8 contracts in the areas of hardware, software and systems integration. The first 3 contracts in financial services integration, change management and network integration were released with the project's launch in 2012.
Two months ago, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a large IT services firm, was awarded a contract for core system integration for all applications that will run in the post and mail offices.
The latest notice for rural ICT hardware vendors will see the selected vendor supply and install rural ICThardware devices and provide network connectivity to approximately 130,000 rural post offices. This will enable the post offices to perform all transactions electronically.
India Post aims to achieve operational efficiency and technology-enabled market leadership through this INR 1877 crore (USD 306 million) modernisation project. It will include creation of an urban-rural network, implementation of integrated operations software and setup of required IT infrastructure.
The project focuses on improving services to rural customers, including developing a fully integrated life insurance platform for the uninsured rural population and transparency in disbursement of social security schemes. It also aims to improve accessibility to financial services through multiple channels, such as internet, ATMs and telephone.
