Central government offices in the city and across the State wore a deserted look on Wednesday.
Nearly 40,000 employees in the city and 1.5 lakh employees across the State stayed away from work on day one of the two-day strike called by the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers, said M. Duraipandian, general secretary of the Confederation, Tamil Nadu.
In the postal department alone, more than 30,000 employees from across the State took part.
Employees from the accountant general’s office, income-tax office, civil accounts, government medical stores and the Central government health scheme, inspectors from Central excise and Customs, besides ministerial staff, were among those who took part in the strike. Workers of the atomic energy facility at Kalpakkam also participated.
Rajaji Bhavan, where about 40 Central government departments, including enforcement agencies such as the Central Industrial Security Force and a wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation, function, also wore a deserted look on Wednesday.
A. Balasundaram, secretary, Rajaji Bhavan Central Government Employees Coordination Committee, said nearly 1,000 employees, including officers, worked on the premises.
Most of the employees did not turn up for work here. The strike was total on the premises, he said.
