The Indian Department of Post has opened its National Data Centre, under a project to modernise IT across the whole agency and transform it into a “technology enabled, self reliant market leader”.
The data centre, spread over 3000 square feet, will act as the nerve centre of all postal services, including savings, insurance and speed post tracking. Located in Mumbai, the data centre can house 80 racks and has a capacity of 250 terabytes, with a 250 terabyte disaster recovery centre in Mysore.
Inaugurating the data centre, Minister for Communications and IT, Kapil Sibal, said, “This is a milestone in the modernisation programme of the postal department, with services such as insurance, savings bank, speed post and money order all being computerised.”
The data centre was set up in collaboration withReliance Communications. It will connect all 155,000 post offices across the country through a single network and serve as a facility to centrally manage the department’s servers.
Information on transactions being carried out at post offices across the country will be available at a near real-time basis and can be accessed securely across the network.
The availability of centralised information lends greater transparency and efficiency to transactions for government schemes such as wage disbursement and pension payments which India Post facilitates.
Real-time integrated data offers more consistency and reliability in the Government’s mail and logistics delivery system.
Other initiatives undertaken by India Post under the IT modernisation project include enhancing rural post offices with ICT, creating a Wide Area Network to connect post offices and implementing integrated operations software.
